Tipping Movers in 2026: How Much, When, and Who Gets It

Moving Tips · 2026-06-18 · 5 min read

What's a fair tip for movers in 2026? Per-mover, per-hour, lump-sum — and whether you tip on long-distance moves. Real numbers from real moves.

Tipping movers is not mandatory, but it's expected — especially on harder moves. Here's what's normal in 2026, what's generous, and when not to tip.

The Standard: $5–$10 Per Mover Per Hour

For a typical 4-hour local move with a 3-person crew, that's $60–$120 total, split among the crew. For an 8-hour move with 4 movers, $160–$320 total. Hand it directly to the foreman at the end with instructions to split, or hand each mover their share individually.

The Lump-Sum Alternative

If you'd rather not do the math: $20–$40 per mover for a half-day local move, $40–$80 per mover for a full day. Generous bumps that 25%.

Long-Distance Moves: $50–$100 Per Mover Per Stop

On a long-distance move you usually have a loading crew and a different unloading crew. Tip each crew separately at the end of their shift. $50 per mover on both ends is normal; $100 per mover if the load involved stairs, narrow access, or extreme weather.

When to Tip More

  • Walk-ups above the second floor — add 25%.
  • Heavy items (pianos, gun safes, marble tables, treadmills) — add $20–$40 per mover.
  • Extreme weather — 100°+ heat or below-freezing — add 25%.
  • Long-carry from truck (300+ feet, no driveway access) — add 25%.
  • Same-day completion when they could have asked for more time — generous tip.

When Not to Tip

If movers showed up late, damaged items, left things behind, or behaved unprofessionally, you're under no obligation. Document the issues with photos and file a claim with the company. Tipping in those situations rewards behavior you don't want to repeat.

Cash vs. Card

Cash is preferred. Many movers split tips at the end of the day, and that's much easier with cash. If you have to use card, ask if the company supports tip-on-card and confirm it goes to the crew (not corporate).

Food and Water

Optional but appreciated. Cold water, electrolyte drinks (especially in summer heat), and lunch for the crew are common. Pizza on a long day is a tradition for a reason — feeding 4 movers costs $50 and earns goodwill that translates to careful handling of the things you care about.

What Movers Wish You Knew

Most moving companies pay $15–$25/hour. Tips are a meaningful part of take-home pay, especially for crews working back-to-back jobs in summer. A fair tip on a smooth move keeps quality movers in the industry — which is good for the next person who moves too.
